Fresh Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 28, 2026 · App: Fresh (package com.freshnospoilers.fresh)
Fresh is an Android app that keeps sports spoilers out of your notifications. It looks at notifications from the apps you choose, decides whether a message looks like sports news, and holds those messages until you release them or turn filtering off. This policy explains what information Fresh uses, where it goes, and the choices you have.
The short version: the text of your messages is analysed on your phone. It is never uploaded, sold, or shared. Fresh only talks to the internet for optional features you turn on (sign-in with Google, subscriptions, ads, game schedules), and none of those send your message content anywhere. If you choose to turn on the optional Learn from my marks feature (off by default), Fresh keeps a little more on your phone, as described in section 2, and that is never sent off your phone either.
1. Who we are
Fresh is published by Fresh: No Spoilers ("we", "us"). Contact: FRESH.
2. Information Fresh accesses
Notification content (the core feature)
You grant Fresh Notification access in Android settings. Fresh then reads notifications posted by the apps it is set to monitor: the sender name, the message text, and the text of earlier unread messages shown in the same notification. By default it monitors popular chat and sports apps; you can add or remove apps, or choose "Monitor all apps", on the Monitored Apps tab. Fresh does not read notifications from apps it is not monitoring.
- Classification happens on your device with a machine-learning model bundled inside the app. The message text is not sent to any server, including ours.
- When a message is held, Fresh keeps a copy of it on your device only so it can show it to you when you release it. It is deleted when released, or when you clear the app's data or uninstall.
- Fresh posts its own notifications, such as "3 messages filtered", and re-posts released messages.
Optional: learning from your corrections (off by default)
Fresh can adjust itself to the way you and your friends talk. This is opt-in: it is switched off until you turn on Learn from my marks in Settings, and you can turn it off or reset it at any time. When it is on:
- Recently delivered messages. Fresh keeps a copy of the most recent messages it let through (up to 30), on your device only, so you can tell it about one that should have been held. Each copy is deleted after 24 hours, as soon as you mark it, when you turn the feature off, or when you clear the app's data.
- Your marks. When you mark a held or delivered message as a spoiler or not, type in an example, or import a file of examples, Fresh stores a compact numeric fingerprint of the words, your answer, and the classifier's score for it. It does not store the readable text of those marks or examples. It also keeps the small adjustment it learns from them (up to 1,000 marks). Reset what Fresh learned deletes all of this.
- Files you import. Fresh reads only the file you choose, once, to learn from it. It does not keep the file or a copy of its text.
- Nothing leaves your phone. None of this is uploaded, shared, or used to train any model other than the private adjustment on your own phone. It is also excluded from Android's backup and device-to-device transfer.
Optional: reading text in pictures (off by default)
If you turn on Read text in pictures, Fresh also looks at the picture that some apps attach to a notification (for example a news alert or a screenshot of a score). This is opt-in: it is switched off until you turn it on in Settings, and it may become part of the Premium subscription in future.
- The picture is read on your device with a text-recognition model bundled inside the app. It is not uploaded, and Fresh does not save the picture.
- The words found in it are classified like any other message. If they look like a spoiler, they are held like a message and shown to you as "Image text", on your device only, until you release them.
- Fresh does not try to identify people or places in pictures, and does not look at profile pictures or app icons.
Account information
- Guest: no account information is collected.
- Sign in with Google: Google provides your name, email address and a Google account identifier to the app. These are stored on your device. We never receive your Google password. If you subscribe to Premium (see below), your Google sign-in token is sent to our server so it can recognise your account.
Settings
Your preferences (sensitivity, monitored apps, ad choices, and whether the optional learning feature is on) are stored on your device.
3. Optional features that use the internet
Some features below may not be available in every version of the app. They run only when available and, where noted, only when you turn them on.
Premium subscription
Subscriptions are sold through Google Play Billing; Google handles your payment details and we never see your card number. To confirm a subscription, the app sends the following to our verification server hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS): your Google sign-in token and the Google Play purchase token. The server checks them with Google and stores a record containing your Google account identifier, the purchase token, the subscription status and its expiry time. It is used only to decide whether your account has Premium and is kept while you have a subscription or until you ask us to delete it. Data in transit uses HTTPS.
Advertising (Google AdMob)
If you choose to turn on ads, Fresh uses Google AdMob to show the ad types you select (banner, interstitial, rewarded, app open). AdMob may collect and use your device's advertising ID, IP address, device and app information, and ad interaction data to serve and measure ads, and may use cookies or similar technologies. Where required (for example in the European Economic Area and the UK) Fresh asks for your consent first through Google's consent form, and you can change your choice later in the app. Fresh never gives AdMob your messages. Premium subscribers do not see ads. Learn more: How Google uses data from sites or apps that use its services. You can reset or opt out of your advertising ID in Android settings.
Game schedules (off by default)
If you turn on "Use game schedules", Fresh downloads public lists of games, teams and players from the data source you choose (TheSportsDB or ESPN). These requests are ordinary web requests, so the provider can see your device's IP address and the request itself. Your messages are never included. Matching of team and player names against your messages happens on your device.
Sports you follow (off by default)
If you turn on "Filter specific sports, teams and games", Fresh downloads public lists of sports, leagues, teams, players, nicknames and games from a server we run. These requests are ordinary web requests, so the server and its hosting provider (Amazon Web Services) can see your device's IP address and which league files were requested, which reveals the leagues you follow but not the teams, players or games you pick in them. The teams, players and games you follow are stored only on your device, and your messages are never included. Matching of those names against your messages happens on your device. Turning the feature off stops the downloads and deletes the downloaded data; your choices stay on your device until you clear the app's storage or uninstall Fresh.
Donations
The Support tab can open Venmo or PayPal links. When you tap one, you leave Fresh and that service's own privacy policy applies. Fresh does not receive any payment information.
4. How we use information
- To detect and hold sports-related notifications, and to show you what is being held.
- To sign you in and to recognise your Premium subscription.
- To show ads you have opted into, and to keep the app working and secure.
We do not sell your personal information, use your messages for advertising, or use them to train our models. If you opt in to Learn from my marks, your own marks adjust a small correction that lives only on your phone; we never receive them.
5. Sharing
We share information only with service providers needed for the features above, and only the minimum they need:
| Provider | Purpose | Data |
|---|---|---|
| Google (Sign-in, Play Billing) | Sign-in and subscriptions | Account identifier, email, name, purchase details |
| Amazon Web Services | Hosts our subscription verification server | Google account identifier, purchase token, subscription status |
| Google AdMob (if you enable ads) | Ads and ad measurement | Advertising ID, IP address, device and ad interaction data |
| TheSportsDB or ESPN (if you enable game schedules) | Public game data | IP address and the request itself |
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect rights and safety.
6. Retention and deletion
- On your device: held messages, accounts and settings stay until you remove them. Clearing the app's storage or uninstalling Fresh deletes them. You can also release held messages and sign out in the app.
- Optional learning data (only if you opt in): copies of recently delivered messages are deleted after 24 hours or sooner (see section 2). Your marks and what Fresh learned from them stay until you tap Reset what Fresh learned, clear the app's storage, or uninstall Fresh. Turning the feature off deletes the delivered-message copies right away.
- On our server: the subscription record described above. To have it deleted, email us at the address above from the account email, and we will delete it. Cancelling a subscription is done in Google Play.
- Backups: Android's backup feature may copy some app data, such as your settings and account details, to your Google account. Fresh tells Android not to back up or transfer held messages, copies of delivered messages, the optional learning data, or the debug log. You can turn backup off entirely in Android settings.
7. Permissions Fresh asks for
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| Notification access | To read and hold notifications from the apps you choose |
| Post notifications | To show "messages filtered" and released messages |
| Internet | For optional features: Google sign-in, subscriptions, ads, game schedules |
| Billing | To buy and manage a Premium subscription through Google Play |
8. Security
Message processing stays on your device; the optional learning data is kept in the app's private storage; account passwords are stored only as salted hashes; and network requests use HTTPS. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
9. Children
Fresh is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example the EEA, UK or California) you may have rights to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. Most of your data is on your own device, where you can manage it directly. For data on our server, contact us using the email above. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority.
11. International transfers
Our server and our providers may process data in the United States and other countries, which may have different data-protection laws than yours.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Fresh changes. We will post the new version here and update the effective date. Continuing to use Fresh after a change means you accept the updated policy.
